James grew up in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia and spent most of his summer at his grandparents’ cottage on the Mira River. He attended Cape Breton University where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration.
After his graduation, James moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta, where he worked as a consultant in the financial sector and as a training coordinator in the construction sector.
James realized he did not want to spend a significant part of his life away from his family and friends, and moved back home to Nova Scotia to study law at Dalhousie University is 2010.
In October of 2015 James co-founded Fitch Violande where he practices predominantly family and criminal law.
